PART 1 – TRIBUTE TO ANGELA BOFILL
Angela Bofill’s inspirational life and amazing musical legacy deserve to be celebrated with greater recognition worldwide.
Angela Bofill was an amazing, beautiful person inside and out – she was one of the most gifted and underrated American female vocalists of all time and one of the first Latina artists to achieve success across Jazz, R&B and Pop music genres Before there were female Latina music artists like Gloria Estefan, Selena (Quintanilla), Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Selena Gomez, Camilo Cabello, and Rosalia, there was Angela Bofill.
In the past few decades, notable celebrities have expressed admiration for Angela Bofill’s incredible music including late legends Aretha Franklin, Prince, Ray Charles, and Tito Puente (Angie’s godfather), as well as renowned artists Carlos Santana, Sheila E. (Escovedo), Mary J. Blige, Lenny Kravitz, Bonnie Raitt, Maysa Leak, Melba Moore, Erykah Badu, Michael Bearden, Denzel Washington, and Danny Glover, to name a few. [5] [6]
ANGELA BOFILL’S EARLY LIFE
Angela Tomasa Bofill was born to a white Cuban father and a black Afro-Latino Puerto Rican mother on May 2, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in the Bronx and in Harlem; she attended high school and college in Manhattan and a university in Connecticut.
In an October 2017 interview, Angela Bofill said “My mother once told me that my crying sounded like music!” with her distinctively cheerful chuckle. [1]
Angela Bofill started singing full songs at the age of four. Her parents were both music lovers. She grew up listening to artists like Diana Ross and The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown as well as Latin artists Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. According to Angela Bofill, “My Daddy was a tenor back in the day.” [1]
Angela Bofill’s father sat in and sang with Machito and the Afro-Cubans – credited as founders of Latin jazz. When she was ten years old, Angela Bofill took music lessons on piano and viola; she also composed a children’s operetta based on a story she read in a Girl Scout book.
As a teenager, while attending Hunter College High School in Manhattan, Angela Bofill sang with New York’s All City High School Chorus and at dances with a trio group she founded the Puerto Rican Supremes. She also was a lead singer in the chorus of the Dance Theater of Harlem. In addition, Angela Bofill was honing her skills as a songwriter.
Around the age of eighteen, Angela Bofill sung with jazz legends Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderley Jr. and Cannonball Adderly. Angela Bofill also sang at Madison Square Garden at a dance show with Bob Hope, Mel Torme, Lionel Hampton and Benny Goodman.
In 1975 at the age of 21, Angela Bofill joined her first band along with Dave Valentin (a childhood friend from the Bronx) – that band was Ricardo Marrero & The Group. Marrero – a percussionist/pianist/vibraphonist would later become a two-time Grammy Award winner; flutist Dave Valentin would go on to receive a 2003 Grammy Award for best Latin jazz album.
In 1976, Angela Bofill earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, where she was classically trained in opera. Angela Bofill also studied voice and theater at The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.

ANGELA BOFILL’S MUSIC CAREER
In 1978, flutist Dave Valentin helped get the very talented, beautiful singer and composer Angela Bofill her first record deal with GRP Records (founded by music producers Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen) – soon after Valentin was signed as the first artist on the new contemporary jazz label.
Between 1978 and 2006, Angela Bofill’s distinctive, warm, emotive, heartfelt alto tone and amazing three and a half octave soaring vocal range crossed over contemporary jazz, R&B/soul, and pop radio and music charts.
During her music career, Angela Bofill recorded ten studio albums starting in 1978 and one live album (2006) on various record labels including GRP, Arista, Capitol, Jive, and Shanachie. Six of Angela Bofill’s albums appeared in the Top 40 of Billboard’s R&B charts; five of her records appeared in the Top 100 of Billboard’s Pop music charts. Bofill also had seven singles in the R&B Top 40 Billboard charts. Between 1986 and 2014, six compilation albums of Angela Bofill’s music were released on Arista, BMG, and RCA/Sony Legacy.
Angela Bofill’s classic debut album Angie released in 1978 on GRP records is still an incredible vocal and musical tour de force – it was also one of the best-selling jazz albums that year.

Angela Bofill’s songs range from sophisticated contemporary and Latin jazz-infused, soulful ballads to upbeat catchy R&B/Pop dance tunes. Her songs feature Angela Bofill’s uniquely beautiful, emotionally expressive, alto tone that transport listeners on a heartfelt journey – the songs are often about love and wax philosophical about life.
Some of Angela Bofill’s notable songs include “Under the Moon and Over the Sky”, “Angel of the Night”, “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter”, “Too Tough”, “I Try”, “I’m On Your Side”, “What I Wouldn’t Do (For the Love of You)”, “Children of the World United”, “Time to Say Goodbye”, “The Only Thing I Would Wish For,” and dozens more.
Angela Bofill’s biggest Billboard charting albums include her second album Angel of the Night(1979) on GRP, three albums produced by Narada Michael Walden for Arista Records: Something About You (1981), Too Tough (1983), and Teaser (1983); also Let Me Be the One(1984) produced by The System (David Frank and Mic Murphy) and Intuition (1988) produced by Norman Connors for Capitol Records.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a young Angela Bofill was a top recording artist appearing on TV shows like Soul Train, The Tonight Show, and on The American Music Awards.
In 1984, Angela Bofill received an American Music Awards nomination for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and won the Bay Area Music Awards (Bammies) 1984 Outstanding Black Contemporary Artist/Group.
In 2011, The Washington Post aptly described Angela Bofill this way: “At the height of her career in the ’70s and ’80s, she stood tall – creamy skin, glittery dresses, white orchid in her hair. She had the look that teenage girls wanted: big cheekbones, sultry eyes she highlighted with blue eyeshadow. She looked like one of those girls in Prince’s band.” [2] In 2012, The Philadelphia Tribune described Angela Bofill with similar admiration: With a gorgeous voice and five-octave range, exotic beauty and an intoxicating stage presence, Angela Bofill took the music world by storm.” [8]

At the 1984 American Music Awards, Angela Bofill presented Michael Jackson an award for Favorite Soul/R&B Album for his iconic Thriller album. In an iconic moment, when Michael Jackson went to accept his American Music Award – he gave Angela Bofill a kiss and she appeared starstruck. Angela Bofill had said “I was a big fan of Michael Jackson” in an Essence Magazine interview in 2020. [5]
Angela Bofill’s one-of-a-kind, expressive signature tone can also be found on background vocals on albums by artists such as Diana Ross, Johnny Mathis, Patti Austin, Kirk Whalum, Marion Meadows, Norman Connors, Alexander Zonjic, Dave Valentin, Stanley Clarke, and Karl Anderson. Also, Angela Bofill drew upon her earlier theater studies when she performed in plays like God Don’t Like Ugly and What a Man Wants, What a Man Needs.
In the U.S., after the mid-1980s, Angela Bofill’s record sales and career slowed down, but she continued to sell-out concert halls and arenas touring in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
In 2006, Angela Bofill released her only live concert album Live from Manila (cover art portrait by painter Bernard Jackson); it was a compilation of some of her greatest hits and had widespread success in the Philippines, Japan, and other places around the world.

TWO STROKES CHANGE ANGELA BOFILL’S LIFE & THE ANGELA BOFILL EXPERIENCE TOUR
After a non-stop, whirlwind music career of more than two decades, in 2006 and 2007 Angela Bofill experienced two major strokes; the second stroke caused her to be partially paralyzed on her left side and temporarily unable to speak. In a 2011 Washington Post article [2], Angela Bofill said: “Tell the truth, I need a break… Over 26 years, no break. I prayed one day, ‘God, I need a break.’ Bam! That’s when stroke hit.” … she joked “Next time, God, maybe another kind break!” trying to make light of what was truly a devasting situation.
According to a 2007 SF Gate article [3], after Hurricane Katrina led to cancellation of Bofill’s numerous concerts… Angela Bofill’s daughter Shauna Vincent (only 23 years old at the time) said her mother “was really stressed out, and I think that had a lot to do with her having a stroke in 2006.”
After that first stroke in 2006, Angela Bofill was in the process of regaining her speech and ability to walk. [3] She was forced to sell her home to pay for her medical expenses and went to live with her sister Sandra for a while. [2]
In 2007, after Angela Bofill’s second stroke, daughter Shauna Vincent said, “it really took a toll on her” and she went “back to needing 24-hour care and intensive therapy.” [3]
As reported by The Philadelphia Tribune, the American Stroke Association informs the public that in the U.S., stroke is the third major cause of death and the main reason that adults become disabled Angela Bofill had said that Philadelphian Davida Godett, who survived three strokes, had played an important role in supporting her recovery after her strokes. [8]
Unfortunately, the second stroke Angela Bofill experienced in 2007 also took away her most treasured ability to sing. As Rich Engel, Angela Bofill’s manager said to The Washington Post, “When you take a voice away from a singer, nothing is worse. A lot of it was like, ‘What do I do now, now that I can’t sing?’ That was her life. Her livelihood was being onstage.” [2]
On March 11, 2006, a BergenPAC benefit concert on the East Coast to raise money to help with medical expenses for Angela Bofill was produced by her manager Rich Engel at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey with Phil Perry, Melba Moore, Pieces of a Dream, and other artists.
On December 8, 2007, The Spirit of Giving: A Concert tribute and benefit for Angela Bofill was held to help cover her medical expenses at the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The 2007 benefit concert for Angela Bofill featured legendary artists Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Narada Michael Walden, and all-star band and choir organized by Angela Bofill’s friend and record producer Narada Michael Walden.
In a 2007 SF Gate article, music producer Narada Michael Walden described Angela Bofill as an innovator who had pushed musical boundaries with her songwriting, vocal prowess, and use of odd meters and unusual approach to rhythm and melody. He endearingly noted: “We look to her (Angela Bofill) as a precedent in music, just like (with) Stevie Wonder.” Music producer Narada Michael Walden described Angela Bofill in a fitting way that those who knew her – as someone “always laughing about life and … situations… open to God and what the universe is trying to say. She’s one of our true spiritual inspirations.”

Two nonprofit organizations – MusiCares.org and the Rhythm and Blues Foundation – also provided some assistance to Angel Bofill after her strokes to cover medical expenses for her rehabilitation. [3]
In 2007, while Angela Bofill was living at a rehabilitation facility, her daughter Shauna Vincent said in a SF Gate article that: “She gets at least a letter every week from a different fan, saying how much they love her, how much her music has touched them, and how many babies they’ve had because of her music.” [3]
Despite these challenges, Angela Bofill courageously persevered by going through over two years of intensive physical therapy while living at a rehabilitation center in the North Bay area.
Eventually, Angela Bofill resiliently regained part of her speech, but unfortunately, did not get back her singing ability. Her mobility improved so she was able to walk with a cane although sometimes, it was easier to be in a wheelchair. Angela Bofill bravely kept a positive attitude, a cheerful disposition and a sense of humor under challenging circumstances and health issues.
After over two years of living in a rehab facility, around Christmas time in December 2009, Angela Bofill went to live with her daughter Shauna Vincent Portuguez, Shauna’s husband Chris and their children for almost fifteen years until her passing on June 13, 2024.
She was home expressing boredom when Rich Engel, her longtime friend and manager, came up with the novel, creative idea to have Angela Bofill participate in a special tour: “The Angela Bofill Experience”.
In 2011, Angela Bofill triumphantly appeared in sold-out shows for The Angela Bofill Experience” limited tour across the U.S. as host and narrator telling her stories and connecting with fans. The Angela Bofill Experience featured Angela Bofill, with renowned vocalists including Maysa Leak, Melba Moore, Phil Perry, and Jonathan Butler singing Bofill’s catalog of well-known songs, accompanied by flutist Dave Valentin, along with Angela Bofill’s old band members and other top musicians.
In a Washington Post article about The Angela Bofill Experience, in her charming way, Angela Bofill had said “I used to study opera. Used to teach voice. Used to have perfect pitch. Now, no pitch. Bad pitch. Frustrated – little bit. Half my life, singing. First time. No sing.” Bofill also expressed gratitude that she was able to be part of The Angela Bofill Experience tour: “I feel happy performing again. I need crowd. In the blood, entertain. Any time a crowd comes to see me, I’m surprised. No sing no more and still people come. Wow. Impressed.”
In that same 2011 Washington Post article about The Angela Bofill Experience tour – Manager and friend Rich Engel said he would like to get a movie made of Angela Bofill’s life and “Ultimately, I’d like to take the show to Broadway.”

PART 2: TRIBUTE TO ANGELA BOFILL:
RETIREMENT LIFE AFTER HER MUSIC CAREER AND TWO STROKES, AND MUSIC LEGACY*
By Val Vaccaro
*[1] Based in part on a phone interview with Angela Bofill by Val Vaccaro on October 26, 2017.
With Angela Bofill’s extraordinary music career behind her, after years of rehabilitation to counteract the partially disabling impact of two strokes, and after her last The Angela Bofill Experience tour in 2011, she entered a retirement phase of life.
During the past decade and a half of Angela Bofill’s life, she found peace of mind, happiness, and joy in many things while living comfortably at the Vallejo, CA home of her loving family – daughter Shauna Vincent-Portuguez, Christopher Portuguez (Shauna’s husband), their four children (Angela Bofill’s grandchildren), and her pets.
Angela Bofill had said “you know – I’m pretty much retired!” [1] Also, Angela Bofill had a respect and love for nature. Every day she enjoyed “the beautiful view of the mountain” from her daughter Shauna and son-in-law Chris’ house. During some years, she also enjoyed having a beautiful garden. [1]
In a 2017 interview [1], Angela Bofill expressed concern about climate change and global warming – including its impact on the area where her family lives. They have been lucky and blessed not to have any damage from dangerous wildfires. In October 2017 (and in September to October 2020) there had been unhealthy smoke in the air leftover from the dangerous Northern California firestorm which caused tremendous destruction in nearby Napa and Sonoma counties.
Also, food played an important role in the joy she shared with her family. Angela Bofill expressed great pride with love that her daughter Shauna and Shauna’s husband Chris were both professional chefs who had graduated from culinary school. Bofill said she considered herself “to be a ‘foodie’ with a passion for food.” From Angela Bofill’s creative perspective, “just like music can produce a certain feeling or emotion – it’s the same with food and memories.” [1]
In the interview, [1] Angela Bofill said she had also been doing some writing which included new lyrics (but not music) and a book. With her charming enthusiasm, Angela Bofill proudly said she was co-authoring with her daughter Shauna Vincent Portuguez “a cookbook/memoir” consisting of new recipes intertwined with emotional stories from her memories. At that time, she also credited making fresh smoothies with her Vitamix as to “why I think I survived two strokes.” [1]
Angela Bofill also had said she was grateful to have health insurance through Medicare. From a serious perspective, Angela Bofill said “(Barack) Obama saved my life basically” (with access to affordable healthcare). This is contrast to when she was only 52-53 years old in 2006 and 2007 when she experienced two serious strokes and did not have any health insurance to pay for her treatment (which was a common problem for musicians, actors, and others in similar professions).
Focusing on sources of happiness, in an upbeat manner, Angela Bofill also had lovingly spoken about her grandchildren and her pets.
Angela Bofill said she really enjoyed the company of “Bochy – my very loving, gentle puppy – I call him my ‘therapy dog’ – he’s my grandpup” she exclaimed with her cheerful laugh. Bofill said her puppy was named after Bruce Bochy the baseball coach. (Bochy is the MLB coach who helped the San Francisco Giants win three World Series championships. Angela Bofill’s family are enthusiastic fans of San Francisco sports teams including the SF Giants, the SF 49ers, and the Golden State Warriors.) Angela Bofill also said with a chuckle that she had a roommate – a guinea pig named Buster whose main activity was to eat all day.
During my 2017 interview with Angela Bofill, she had enthusiastically exclaimed: “I love my Grandmother status”. My Grandkids make me joyous!! An example Angela Bofill gave was that “my grandkids and me compose jingles songs sometimes – baby songs – it’s fun – you know!” (laughing in her charming manner).
0n a more serious note, Angela Bofill shared this poignant story which is especially heartfelt after her passing on June 13, 2024. “My grandkids call me “Ya Ya”. Their great grandmother (her son-in-law Christopher’s grandmother) passed away (in 2017) at 100 ½ years old. My grandkids (who were at the time about 6 and 7 years old) knew their great grandmother and they were upset about her death. They had a lot of questions… and they were worried about their Ya Ya (me their grandmother) someday passing away. So I said to them… “Don’t worry about it – my life’s music will live forever.”
ANGELA BOFILL’S MUSICAL LEGACY
From Angela Bofill’s perspective, she believed that “After I composed the song “Children of the World United” then God allowed me the opportunity to have a record deal.” “Children of the World United” appeared on her debut album Angie in 1978 on GRP Records. [1]
Angela Bofill’s song “Children of the World” was sampled by these hip-hop/R&B artists DJ Quik’s “Real Women,” featuring Jon B, as well as Big K.R.I.T.’s “Children of the World.” [4]
In a 2020 interview Angela Bofill did for Essence Magazine, she said that if she was ever able to sing again, she would like to sing the song she composed “Children of the World United” because “The message is pertinent in our times still… I believe in this positive thinking.” [5]
The lyrics to Angela Bofill’s 1978 song “Children of the World United” are truly profoundly relevant today for those who support a vision for a world of peace, faith, and kindness. [10]
If we’re all here
To teach each other how to live
Then we should all be good to one another
Forgetting about the fights we all had
And the wars
And the tears that we all shed
Let’s try to understand
Then walk in hand and hand
With your fellow man and woman
Kind is God’s plan
We’ll be singing like the birds
With music at our words
Children of the world united
I had a dream
About a mountain rising high above
And when we got to the top of the mountain
We were learning how to love and how to live
How to teach
And how to give with all our hearts
We all could understand
Then walk in hand and hand
With our fellow man and woman
Kind is God’s plan
On June 24, 2023, renowned singer and composer Angela Bofill received the well-deserved recognition of being inducted into the Women’s Songwriters Hall of Fame.

As part of her musical legacy, Angela Bofill’s songwriting and albums have also influenced a younger generation of artists. Various hip-hop and R&B artists have sampled Angela Bofill’s songs including Faith Evans, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Rick Ross featuring John Legend, Big Sean featuring Dwele, DJ Quik featuring Jon B, and Big K.R.I.T. all pay homage and reflect the universal legacy of Angela Bofill’s music. [4]
During the last few years, on Angela Bofill’s Facebook page, her manager Rich Engel has often posted Spotify and Apple Music reports showing hundreds of thousands of listeners for Angela Bofill’s timeless Jazz/R&B/Pop music. Before she passed, Angela Bofill posted comments on Facebook, reminiscing about her music career along with old photos, and expressing delight in response to fans who frequently post about their love and devotion for her and her music.
For example, a 2018 Spotify year-end report of Angela Bofill’s music showed 4 million streams, 687,000 fans listening 267,000 hours in 65 countries. That’s impressive for an artist that has not toured since 2006 and has not been on the Billboard charts for about two decades.

Since Angela Bofill’s passing on June 13, 2024, fans’ tributes have been pouring in on Angela Bofill’s official Facebook page, other Facebook groups, on Instagram, and other social media to honor and pay tribute to Angela Bofill – the very talented, amazing one-of-a-kind vocalist, songwriter, and performer.

In a 2020 Essence interview, when asked if she ever played any of her albums around the house, Angela Bofill said that “Yeah, you know, sometimes. Angel of the Night is my favorite.” [5]
Angela Bofill is truly an “Angel Of The Night” – she is sometimes affectionately referred to in the press as Angelita de la Noche – her beautiful spirit, inspirational story, and timeless, heartfelt music will live forever – soaring “Under the Moon and Over the Sky” and will continue to touch millions of hearts and souls around the world.
Angela Bofill’s song “Under the Moon and Over the Sky” from her 1978 debut album Angie is a musical masterpiece – featuring Bofill’s gorgeously lush, expressive, soaring, spirited vocals with a beautiful, sophisticated music production mixture of contemporary jazz, Latin jazz and sounds of nature; it is a quintessential song that expresses Angela Bofill’s poetic nature and soul: “The universe is waiting for you…To live a life That’s happy and free.” (See below for the full lyrics…) Hopefully, now Angela Bofill’s spirit is happy and free. Under the Moon and Over the Sky
Lyrics and Music by Angela Bofill
Like the wings of a bird
My heart soaring way up high
Under the moon and over the sky
A man and a woman
A love that could never die
Under the moon and over the sky
The universe is waiting for you
To live a life
That’s happy and free
Let’s all go out
And reach for the sun
Happiness and love could be for everyone
If we just try a little harder
Like the wings of a bird
My heart soaring way up high
Under the moon and over the sky
Under the moon and over the sky
Under the moon and over the sky
Under the moon and over the sky
